The scope of this award is to demonstrate a method of improving fuel efficiency of a diesel-electric generator set by allowing the diesel engine to operate at significantly lower rotational speed when power demand decreases. A permanent magnet coupling will be used to implement controlled coupling between the diesel engine and electric generator which will allow maintained fixed rotational speed of the electric generator at various diesel engine rotational speeds. Following a field demonstration, a report will be prepared that documents the system performance and assesses projected capital and operations and maintenance costs of future system iterations.
